Apiaries are built to hold beehives for bee families and for carrying out commercial beekeeping work. They are a characteristic feature of the Slovene cultural landscape. Their construction requires technical, aesthetic and economic knowledge, as well as craft skills.

The bearer of the element of the intangible cultural heritage is The Slovenian Beekeepers' Association. 

Nomination Beekeeping in Slovenia, a way of life, was on the 1. December 2022 listed on the UNESCO Representative List of intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
